I have seen so many people spending hours on social media trying to build a following because it is a common philosophy that more followers on social media=more success. And we believe in this philosophy so strongly that our main focus is building a social media following.
And I get it. I have been there too. Trying everything under the sun to gain more followers on social media and trying to boost your engagement.
And while a lot of these people are just looking at the numbers and are just looking at the likes and comments, for someone who is building a business, they don’t make much sense. These are all vanity metrics in a way. Because the number of likes you get on social media can’t be your success criteria. Sure if you are looking to be an influencer, then yes, these numbers are important. But fore most businesses, the quality of social media followers that you have is even more important than the number of followers you have.
Because the followers don’t matter if they are never going to buy from you. Those numbers alone are not going to drive you traffic or boost your sales.
And to an extent this applies to the influencer community as well. What good is having 20,000 followers if the number of likes on your post is 100. And when you are looking for brand collaborations, this engagement is what will matter the most. Someone who has 2k followers but high engagement might be paid more than someone who has 10k followers but super low engagement.
And that’s why it becomes even more important that you focus on building an audience that supports you.
Okay, so quality over quantity but I still need followers, how do I do that?
People often need a reason to follow someone. And that is the value that they are getting from following someone. Why should someone follow you? What value do you offer to your followers.
Ask yourself what value can you provide to your followers. Are you a travel blogger who shares the best destinations and recommendations, itineraries etc? Or are you a food blogger who keeps coming up with new recipes on their social media? Are you educating your audience in some way?
And if not, now is the time to start. And if you think there is nothing you can teach your audience, it is always a good idea to ask your followers “What value do they want from you”. Because sometimes we tend to take some things for granted and we think that everyone knows a particular thing. While, in fact, it is something that you could teach your audience and hence provide value.
Like not everyone knows how to make IG story covers, or how to edit stories in IG itself. Every small thing adds up.
2. Be Authentic:
This is super important too. Be yourself on social media and let your personality shine through your content. Do not try to like everyone else out there on social media, that takes all the fun out of it.
And also, when you are not being yourself, your audience can usually tell. And you will also struggle to make a trust and a relationship with your audience.
Of course you don’t need to show every aspect of your life on social media, but make sure you share your life and everything that goes behind the curated feed on your instagram account.
3. Check your analytics:
If you currently do not have a business account, consider switching to a business profile because you get all the analytics. We love using analytics and checking what kind of content performs well with our audience, what is the best time to post etc.
To make the most out of analytics, do a quick can on which were your top performing posts last month or in the last couple of months. And then try to see what you wrote in the caption and what kind of a photo was it. And then try creating more such posts in the future, because you already know your audience likes those kind of posts.
Also check your analytics to see what is the best time to post on what days and when is your audience most active. Posting during the optimal time will help with more engagement, which in turn indicates to instagram’s algorithm that it is a good post. And thus IG shows it to even more people, thus increasing your reach.
4. Be Social:
It is called social media for a reason. Posting a picture and then just engaging with other’s posts or leaving comments like “Beautiful pic” isn’t helping you. Try being social and try working on building relationships with people. Try connecting with people. It is a great idea to join some online communities where you can interact with like minded people.
We are in several such communities and you build real relationships with these people through the community. And more often than not, you will also be able to market your products or services to these people. Make sure you aren’t trying to push the sales though. Recommend something only if someone has asked for it.
We talk to a lot of people and whenever someone asks us for advice on a topic that we have a blogpost on, we make sure to send them a link to the post. And I think it is a great way to build relations as well as promote your content.
5. Do not follow/unfollow:
I have seen so many accounts following 10k people, simply in the hopes that some of those people will follow them back. And a few weeks later, they unfollow everyone who doesn’t follow back. And while this may spike your follower count, but none of these followers have a relationship or trust with you.
And honestly, the follow unfollow game is quite frustrating. And while there is nothing wrong in clearing out your following list because of changed interests, don’t play this game. It hurts you in the long run because Instagram’s algorithm considers this to be spammy behaviour and a lot of people end up getting shadow banned or their accounts get deleted by IG.
6. Make it easy to follow you & add call to action:
If you want people from one social media to follow you on another one, you have to make it easy for them to follow you. Maybe include links to your Instagram account in your blogposts. Here is our Instagram btw, consider following us! (We share a lot of BTS of the blog over on our Instagram) 😉
And you also have to add a call to action. Sometimes people just need to be reminded of something. There is nothing wrong in asking someone to follow you or in asking someone to check out your social media profiles. So, make sure to add a call to action. Tell people to subscribe to your mailing list or to follow you on instagram.
These are all the tips that have helped us gain social media followers and we still use till date. Now go build your social media following the right way. No follow-unfollow okay?
