Does your living room need a refresh? I have been pinning ideas on pinterest for the longest time only to realise that half of them involve me getting rid of all my furniture and getting new one. And the rest of them are also way out of my budget.
This got me thinking “How to do a living room makeover on a budget” and I started looking for living room makeover ideas. Which brings you this post.
So, if you have been looking for Living room makeover ideas on a budget, here are 10 living room decor ideas that are perfect for you. It doesn’t have to be a big budget renovation. It can be something as simple as changing your cushions. But these ideas will still bring new life to your living room so let’s get started.
1.Add some plants:
We’re big plant lovers and keep saying it here on the blog that plants are you best bet at breathing life into your spaces. Whether it is your bedroom, living room, kitchen or bathroom, plants will be the perfect decor piece.
And the best part is, that they are really budget friendly too. And with plants like Pothos, you can easily migrate them at home. And they can even thrive on just plain water.
So there is no need to worry about watering them and taking care of them. All you need to do is change the water every two weeks or so. I love pothos because they can survive even when we are on a long vacation. In fact they might be one of my favourite house plants.
Fun Fact: Did you know pothos are called money plant in India and how much a pothos grow is considered an indication of the abundance of money in your life.
If you do not have plants in your living room, that’s exactly what you’ve been missing. Consider bringing in some greenery into your living room and giving it a much needed refresh.
If you can take care of plants, bird of paradise and fiddle leaf are really good ones as house plants. Both of them are really popular as house plants and are easy to maintain and do not shed a lot of leaves. They are both really easy to clean as well as both have big leaves that you can easily clean.
2. Change the cushions:
Yes, something as simple as changing your cushions or even cushion covers can completely change your living room. And yes you can do it every now and then and now wait for holiday season. I love bringing out a pop of color in the cushions during spring time.
You could also try floral cushions to match the spring season. And then change it up when you feel like you need a refresh. I find it best to buy cushion covers instead of cushions with fillers. Cushion covers are just so much easier to store as they take up lesser space.
3. Throws matter, Okay:
When you change your cushions, don’t forget about the throw. I love having a variety of throws in a rattan basket in the living room and keep changing it every now and then.
You’d be surprised to see how much difference does something as simple as changing a throw makes to your space. And no you do not need to buy a new throw. Sometimes I simply change the place of throws between rooms. So I will bring out throws from the bedroom into the living room and so on.

This allows me to bring a new look to two spaces with one simple change. Having said that, it really works if all of your rooms have a very similar color palette and everything fits everywhere and you can simply mix and match.
I personally love pastels and have all the throws in pastel shades that are super easy to mix and match but a simple cream throw also goes with every kind of decor and is really common as well.
4. Add a pop of color:
If you feel like your living room looks a bit dull and there isn’t anything exciting about the space, try adding color. You don’t need to go wild with the colors. Keep it simple and minimal. Just add different shades of one color at a time. I use solid pastel color throws and often add a few decor pieces in a similar color so it looks like everything fits together.

Sometimes the pop of color can also come from plants. If you do not trust yourself enough to take care of a living plant, consider getting a faux plant. They add a really nice green element too.
Whenever you’re adding greens to your space, just make sure to balance it out with some warm tones and colors. I love mixing greens and pastels as i think it’s a match made in heaven. Green also go really well with natural wood tones, so consider adding a jute rug or rattan baskets or planters.
5. Time for a new rug:
Rugs are so underrated, don’t you agree? Rugs can totally make or break any room and rugs are that one thing that ties your whole room together. So if you want to give your living room a facelift, changing your rug can be the only thing you have to do.
And I’ll admit, it’s difficult to find a rug that you really like and that goes with your furniture and the decor. That’s why I often buy a rug first and then choose the color theme of a room. It’s just something I do. I know not everyone is as weird as me.
But, since you already have all the furniture pieces for your living room, finding a new rug could also do the trick. You just have to be patient and find a rug that you really love. It’s a little time consuming, but so rewarding.
I also love layering different rugs to add a layer of texture and prints and color and layering rugs can make your room look like it’s right out of Pinterest.
6. Re-arranging your furniture:
Ah, If I had a penny for every time we moved our living room furniture around! Raise your hand if you’re guilty of this one too. I am just one of those people who keep changing the configuration of their living room. I swear every time we move into a new house, this is probably the only thing my husband is really terrified of.
But, in my defence, changing up how the furniture is laid out makes such a big impact. And the best part is that you do not need to spend a dime on the “makeover”. Maybe you’ll need a back massage later on, but hey, totally worth it.
And no, you don’t need to go moving around your couch every single time. You can simply change the layout of decor pieces on the shelfs. Or you could try experimenting with a different stacking of books.
Sometimes something so simple can make all the difference and might be just what you need.

curtains are the largest piece of fabric in your living room and while can get neglected with furniture and rugs getting all the importance. I feel like your curtains can really change up the space.
I personally love changing out curtains twice a year, especially in the living room. I have light and breezy ones for summers and then thick lush ones for the winters. And I love how changing the curtains transforms our living room with seasons.
If you want to do a little living room makeover on a budget, consider changing your curtains. I know I know curtains can be really expensive. but think of it as a long term investment. So have two set of curtains and keep changing them every now and then.
I also got a printed cotton curtains custom made and they were such a mood until my dog ripped one of them lol. And I couldn’t find the same print fabric again. I am planning to do that again in a different print this time.
