Today I am sharing 23 things you can declutter from your bedroom to simplify your space. These tips will help you in making your bedroom a calm and relaxing space for you, that you so rightfully deserve.
When was the last time you decluttered your bedroom? Do you even remember? Funnily enough, our bedrooms do tend to get neglected when it comes to decluttering. For us they always do. We always start the declutter or spring clean with the living room and kitchen and give up before we can get to our bedroom.
And it’s funny because our bedrooms tend to accumulate a lot of clutter. And it’s one space in our homes where we spend most of our time in. We sleep, get ready for work and relax and unwind after a long work day, right in our bedrooms. So it makes sense for the bedroom to be a clutter and stress free space, does it not?
So, in this post, I am sharing the most common types fo clutter people tend to have in their bedrooms and maybe you can get some ideas for your next cleaning day when the crazy cleaning lady inside you comes knocking.
23 THINGS TO DECLUTTER FROM YOUR BEDROOM:
Goes without saying that all our declutter sessions begin with the clothes. And if you are someone who has more clothes than they have the space for them, it’s high time. Also a great idea when you have drawers that are overflowing with clothes and you constantly find yourself saying “I have nothing to wear”.
Get rid of clothes you haven’t worn in a while. Declutter clothes that no longer fit you and also the ones that are no longer your style and bring you no joy.
Do you really need 10 books on your bedside table? I think not. Declutter the books and keep only the one that you are currently reading. Same goes with journals. Just keep one of you like to journal at night or in the mornings. Keep the rest at your work desk.
3. Skin care:
Speaking of side tables, I used to have about 10 skin care products on mine. That made it look very cluttered and guess what? I wasn’t even using all of them daily. So I simplified my night time skin care routine and now only have 2 things on my bedside table i.e a chapstick and a hand cream.
Displaying jewelry sure looks nice, but it tends to make the space look cluttered too, especially when you are hanging it or keeping in a tray on top of your dresser. I now keep mine in perfect little vintage boxes and only keep 2-3 things in a small dish on top of my dresser. So only keep the items that you wear on the daily and keep the rest stored perfectly to reduce the visual clutter.
5. Picture frames:
I know accent walls with tons of picture frames were really in at one point in time, but in my opinion it just adds a lot of visual clutter, especially in your bedroom. Keep the decor simple in your bedroom. Maybe hang a few pieces of art and that should be good enough for the decor. Let your bedroom breathe a little.
Okay so if you have an obsession with candles, you will probably hate me for saying this, but I am going to say it anyway. You don’t need 3 different candles out at one point in time. just keep one that you are currently burning and save the rest for later. It’s possible, I have done that too.
7. Decor pieces:
Decor does bring a space to life, but only to a certain point. After which, it is just clutter. To make sure that your place isn’t cluttered, take time while decorating and use only pieces that serve a purpose too. So maybe a really pretty wall clock or a super pretty accent lamp. Do not keep knick knacks as decor just for the sake of it.
having too many lamps will make your bedroom look clutter. Don’t come at me for saying this. i love my lamps too, but maybe you can try replacing some with light fixtures or scones. We did that for our bedside lamps and it gave us so much free space on our bedside tables.
While I absolutely love rugs, Having too many can make your place look cluttered. And on top of that, they are also a tripping hazard. So make sure you have rugs that are practical and aren’t too small that they are there just for the sake of it or just because you really like rugs. Know what I mean?
We have not had a Tv in our bedroom for the last 3 years and it was the best decision ever. not only do the make the place look cluttered, with the remotes and speakers and what not, they also interrupt with your sleep. So if you have been having trouble sleeping, it’s time to consider moving the tv out.
No you do not need 20 pillows on your bed. They sure look pretty when you have a super large bedroom and when everything is made up. But they aren’t that practical on the daily. We only have 4 pillows on our bed and it makes it super easy to make the bed each morning and I love how clutter-free it looks.
I do not even want to get into this debate. I am a sucker for pretty throws and had the most difficult time decluttering them. I had so much more than I actually needed in my house. And I bet some of you do too. It’s time to declutter them.
Shoes are something that a lot of people tend to neglect when it comes to decluttering. But think about it. how many shoes do you usually wear in a month? I bet you rotate the same 2-3 pairs the entire month. So maybe it’s time to declutter the shoes and keep only the ones that you use regularly.
Since we are already talking about shoes, let’s talk about socks too. when was the last time you decluttered your sock drawer? I always find myself buying new pairs of socks but never throwing away old worn out ones. And over time, they add up. At one point I counted and I had more than 30 pairs and I said to myself “this is ridiculous. I don’t need 30 pairs of socks”. Now I have about 10, which is such a big change.
15. Overflowing Laundry Basket:
If you have your laundry basket in your bedroom and it is always overflowing with dirty laundry, maybe it’s time to give it a new place. You do not need to be looking at dirty laundry every day and to be stressing about getting it done. We shifted ours to our bathroom. But you can shift it near your washer and dryer unit if you have the space.
If you are someone who can’t keep a plant alive to save their life, then it’s best to keep them out of your bedroom. But if you are really keen on adding more green into your space, maybe give fake plants to go. At least they won’t die or attract bugs.
17. Anything that doesn’t belong:
We all have that one place in our homes where all the miscellaneous things keep on accumulating. And if your bedroom is that place in your house, you need to do something about it. Things can get super messy super fast. And if you do not tackle them on the daily, they will pile up and then take you longer to declutter. So put things away in their rightful place every morning during a speed declutter.
18. Stuff under the bed:
If you have storage space under your bed, then there is nothing wrong with utilising that. but if you are throwing things under your bed, and they never see the light of the day, that’s another thing. So make sure you are de cluttering the space under your bed on a regular basis.
If you have decorative shelves in your bedroom, you will understand when I say that they are such a hassle. You keep collecting small decor pieces to fill up those shelves, but they are super difficult to clean and keep organised. So if possible, try decluttering the decor on the shelves. I had ours taken out and it was the best decision ever.
Okay I am not actually against curtains. I love curtains. I think they can totally make the space. Just not when they are super chunky and tall that they touch the ground. No matter what the weather, I like having curtains that let some amount of light some in. Curtains that keep breezy and let natural light come in. I also hate the look when curtains touch the floor and gather because that looks super cluttered. So get your curtains altered to the perfect length, if you don’t, currently.
I am not really big on the purse game, but if you are, then it’s for you. No you do not really need 20 purses. I usually use one for every day use that I keep in my top dresser drawer along with my sun glasses etc. But if you have multiple purses that you keep changing regularly, consider making some shelves for them in your closet, so they aren’t adding to the visual clutter in your bedroom.
Do you really need 5 jackets when you only ever wear the same one on the daily? Store the rest away in your closet and keep only one jacket out that you wear regularly.
23. Un-necessary furniture:
We had a Dresser that was not really getting used and was adding to clutter in the bedroom. So we took it out and it cleared up so much space in the bedroom. So if you have any un-necessary furniture in your bedroom too, it’s time to take that out. Maybe you’ll be able to free up some space after you have decluttered and purged your wardrobe.
I donated about half of my closet a few years back and by default needed 1 dresser instead of two. I know that’s probably too much for some of you, but every little step helps. You don’t have to let go off half of your stuff just yet. Take baby steps and you will get there. Make decluttering and purging a habit and something that you do every few months.
And that’s it. Everything you can declutter from your bedroom over the weekend. I hope this post gave you some ideas and inspired your to declutter. having a clutter free bedroom will be life-changing. All you need to do is take the first step.
