Ask anyone what’s the most cluttered room in their house is and chances are they will say their garage. But a close second is always the bedroom. And it’s not difficult to see why.
We spend most of our times in our bedrooms. Be it sleeping, getting ready for work, relaxing and winding down post work and what not. And bringing stuff into your bedroom is almost inevitable. And thus, overtime, bedrooms start accumulating clutter and become quite messy.

12 Things to declutter/Ban from your bedroom:
Your bedroom should be a space for relaxation and rest, almost like a sanctuary. It should be a place that re-energises and rejuvenates you after a long day’s of work.
And I hate to break this to you, but watching tv or spending hours on screens is not the way to do it. Our phones have practically become an extension of ourselves and it’s almost impossible for most people to not bring phones to bedrooms. But we could avoid all other screens for sure.
Our bodies produce melatonin hormone, which helps us go to sleep at night. And the pineal gland starts producing melatonin when it starts getting dark. However, there are a couple of factors that can interrupt the production of melatonin naturally.
Studies have shown that the blue lights from electronics such as mobiles, laptops, tvs, ipads etc disrupt the melatonin production and thus the quality of our sleep and problems like insomnia.
Here’s what you can do:
- Limit the use of electronics in your bedroom. It starts with not having any technology like tv, phones, laptops in your bedroom.
- Do not use any electronics / screens at least 2 hours before going to bed. Make it a rule and stick to it.
- Get a blue light screen for all the screens you have in your house.
- Invest in some blue light glasses and make sure to use them throughout the day if you spend hours looking at screens for work.
- Make a night time routine that involves doing things other than screens like reading a book, meditating, skin care etc.
Having a clutter free space is important for your bodies and minds to be able to relax. And reducing the amount of clutter from your bedroom can be life-changing. I am not even exaggerating.
When you reduce the clutter from your bedroom and create a clean space to relax, you are essentially giving yourself enough space for positive energy to flow. And this will be life changing when you are trying to relax after a long day.
Having a clutter free space will also help because it reduces the time it takes to clean your space, making it possible for you to have a clean and stress home home just by spending a few minutes every day. I have decluttered our bedroom and now it literally takes me 15 minutes to have a clean fresh looking room every morning. And there is nothing I appreciate as much as having a clean space.

3. An overflowing Laundry basket:
For the longest time, we had our laundry basket in a corner in our Bedroom, because it made sense. We change from our work clothes in the bedroom and they go directly in the laundry basket.
But it’s not such a pretty sight when you are relaxing after a hard day’s work. It is just another reminder to get things done and can cause un-necessary stress.
So, if you feel stressed out by looking at your laundry basket too, it’s time to find it a new space in the house, preferably in your laundry unit if you have one. We now have ours in our bathroom under the sink and that works too. No stressing about things when it’s time to relax and unwind, not anymore.
4. Un-necessary Decor:
Do you have a lot of decor pieces in your bedroom too? It’s time to declutter and keep only a few. All they do is collect dust, am I right? I find that keeping only a few practical pieces serves me the best. I mean do you really need 10 picture frames on top of your dresser?
It’s time to rethink about your bedroom decor and keep only the pieces that bring you joy and that serve some practical purpose.
5. Skin care on your bedside table:
I used to hoard skin care for the longest time And I’d make a very elaborate night time routine and keep 20 things on my bedside table. But again, all they do is add clutter, create a messy environment and collect dust.
I have now transitioned to a much simpler, minimalistic night time skin acre routine that involves only a few items. And I do that before going to bed every single day. So I keep all the products in the washroom.
And my bedside table is free to keep a book, a glass of water and a cute little succulent that makes me super happy when I look at it. And that’s about it.
Do you really need 10 books on your nightstand? I think not. Take the books you have already read out of your bedroom. Create space for more meaningful things and things that serve a purpose at the time. So any finished books should go to the library or maybe you could lend some to friends.
Same goes with planners and notebooks. I do like writing things down and have about 5 notebooks that I se at a given point in time. but that doesn’t mean I have them all on my bedside table.
I only have a journal and a pen in my side table. And that’s because I usually write for 10-15 minutes at the end of each day. It’s like a daily journal mixed with a gratitude journal. But I keep all the other journals and notebooks on my work desk.
7. Work Desk:
Even if you work from home, try not to have your word desk in the same space as your bed. Your bedroom should be a place for you to relax and not have to stress or think about work. And not having your work desk in your bedroom will make that easier for you.
So if you have a designated space in your home that you can use as a home office, go ahead and do that. However, if you live in a small space and do not have the luxury of having separate spaces, try making some distinction like using a separate wallpaper in your home office corner or doing a partition.
I have seen people make home offices in their closets and then they can just close the closet when the work day is finished. I find that idea brilliant. So if you have a closet that’s big enough, maybe think of something like that.
And Pinterest is full of ideas, so go looking for inspo and give your home office a makeover and reclaim your bedroom space.
8. Old Pillows:
How often do you change your pillows? Do you remember the last time you did? If you can’t, it’s time to think about changing your pillows. Get rid of old deflated pillows. They do not deserve a space in your bedroom. They aren’t that great for your sleep either. So if you have been having trouble getting good sleep at night, maybe the culprit is the pillow.
Imagine you could get rid of all your neck problems and your sleeping problems just by changing your pillows? How simple right. And you deserve a good night’s sleep to wake up feeling refreshed to tackle the new day.
Another sign that you should consider changing your pillow is if you have been getting a lot of acne or skin problems recently. Our pillows tend to accumulate dirt, that seeps through the pillow covers that causes acne and skin problems. So make sure you are changing yours every now and then.
Having more clothes than you possibly need requires space to store them. And that just means having more dressers in your bedroom. This can make your bedroom look quite cluttered and like there isn’t enough space to breathe.
So make sure to do a declutter and purge your wardrobe every few months and keep only clothes that bring you joy and that you wear. There’s no point in hoarding clothes that you haven’t worn in months. Maybe you could even do away with a dresser and create more space in your bedroom.
And while we’re talking about un-necessary furniture, do you have the chair? The chair in your bedroom that no one sits on. but is used to put clothes and piles of clothes? it’s time to get rid of it. You will create more space and there will be less opportunity for you to create clutter in the future.
Same goes with the bench at the end of the bed. As good as it looks in magazines and in large bedrooms, do you have the space for it? Does it serve a purpose other than being something you’re constantly stabbing your toes with? If not, then it’s time for it to go.
Trust me when I say this, you do not need more shelves. While shelves are great because they make it possible for you to utilise the vertical space. Having shelves in your bedroom will eventually lead to clutter.
First comes the shelves, then you will add things to decorate them, and then everything will eventually collect dust. Sorry to be such a party pooper. But I can’t stress this enough. Add shelves only when you want space for something practical that you will use every single day.
11. Exercise equipment:
I know a lot of people who will say that you should have your little workout station in your room to make sure you are working out regularly. But do you really want your bedroom to be smelling like a gym? No one wants that when you are trying to relax after work. It’s not ideal and no amount of candles will make your room smelling fresh again.
And anyway workout equipment isn’t pretty to look at, so make sure you have it in a designated space that’s not your bedroom. I workout on our balcony, so that’s where the yoga mat and other equipment stays.
While plants can make any room look more alive, they don’t really help when they attract bugs or are dying. So if you are someone who can’t keep the plants alive or just forget to take care of them and clean them regularly, maybe take them out of your bedroom. And if you really want some greens, add some faux plants, they’ll do the trick.
